Anti-reflective Lens Coatings – Pros and Cons

March 11th, 2010 by admin

Anti-Reflective Coating: Are you missing out on a clearer picture?

Anti-reflective coatings reduce unwanted reflections from surfaces and are commonly used on spectacle, photographic and optical instrument lenses. Reflections are a problem for spectacle wearers. Power rings, which are particularly noticeable in high minus lenses, are produced by multiple reflections at the lens surfaces. If these internal and external reflections are reduced, then the light transmission is increased, therefore increasing clarity. The decreased reflection also reduces glare and ‘ghost’ images which are observed with night driving or working in front of the computer monitor, dramatically reducing eye fatigue. Cosmetically speaking, an antireflective coating allows a spectacle wearer’s eye and face to be seen more clearly by the observer.

In the Beginning

The basic principle underlying an anti-reflective coat is called ‘destructive interference’. Anti-reflective coatings are possible because light travels as a wave and we can put to the use the destructive interference technique. If the coating is a quarter wavelength thick, then the reflections from the front and the back of the coating layer will be out of phase with each other, therefore will cancel each other out and there will be no visible reflection.

For an anti-reflective coating to work, the refractive index of the coating material needs to be equal to the square root of the refractive lens material. Anti-reflective coatings are particularly suited to high index lenses.

Cons

One of the major complaints by spectacle wearers concerning anti-reflective coatings is that they are difficult to keep clean. However, they are unaware that without the coating, the unwanted reflection effectively masks any dirt, smears or smudges on the lens.

This is also the case for scratches which become more noticeable on an anti-reflective coated lens. The scratching is of course, made worse by the frequent cleaning, therefore it is important to not use a dry tissue or your shirt to clean the lenses, particularly if they are dusty.

Pros

Anti-reflective coatings today for the most part include an additional hydrophobic coating that repels water and grease. This will prevent water marking and fogging and by reducing static build-up makes them easier to clean.

Benefits of the ‘new’ Anti-reflective coatings include:

Easy to clean

Scratch resistant

Durability

Heat resistance

Visual Clarity

Cosmesis (lenses look invisible – like the TV presenters)

Improved light transmission aiding night driving

The Popularity of Daily Disposable Lenses

March 8th, 2010 by admin

Daily disposable lenses are amongst the most popular type of contact lenses sold in the UK. People tend to like them for a number of reasons particularly because they are so comfortable, convenient and offer a number of health benefits.

Interestingly, daily lenses have a much wider following in Britain than they do in the United States. In the UK more than 30% of people who buy contact lenses for the first time choose daily disposables. However, in the USA only 6% opt for daily disposable lenses.

Research suggests that comfort is the strongest driver of preference in the UK. In fact, a recent survey revealed that over 80% of contact lens wearers questioned said that they thought daily lenses were more comfortable than fortnightly disposable contacts.

One of the reasons why dailies are more comfortable than other lenses is the fact that they do not tend to get deposit build up on the tear film since they are changed so regularly.

Of course the convenience offered by daily disposables is another big advantage for wearers. They are unique in that they do not require the user to clean and disinfect them. This makes them incredibly easy and hassle free to look after. As a result they are often recommended by optometrists for children as well as for frequent travelers. They are particularly beneficial for the latter because they do not need to pack spares and solutions.

Daily disposable contact lenses also offer a real health benefit in that wearers are less likely to get infections from them since dirt is unable to build up on their surfaces as they are thrown away at the end of each day.

In addition to this, people who wear daily disposables do not seem to suffer from dry eyes as much as wearers of other types of lenses. Moreover they are also less likely to develop allergic reactions because of the lack of surface build up.

Replacement PS2 Lens – Fix Your Playstation 2 Disc Read Errors And Play All Your Games Again

March 7th, 2010 by admin

The most common error – and error that clearly shows that there is an issue with your ps2 lens, is the disc read error. What this means is that when you insert a game disc into your console, and close the tray, when trying to load that game, you’ll have a disc read error. It will show up on your screen by telling you that this disc can not be read by your console.

Less noticeable indications that your ps2 lens is no longer working as it should can be diagnosed by skipping while playing your game. Mainly when watching into screen movies, or cut scenes between levels. When you notice that there is a jerky / jittery, even full blow skipping on your screen, and you’re sure that your disc does not have any major scratches that would cause this, then it’s probably an indication that your ps2 lens needs to be replaced or repaired.

A very good way to determine if the issues you are having are with your game or the ps2 lens itself, is to load that very same game into your friends PS2 console, and see if the exact same problems occur with the game in another Playstation 2 as well. If the game loads as it should, and the skipping is not there – or in the case of a full disc read error where your game simply will not load up, but loads just fine in another Playstation 2 console, then it is definitely an indication of your PS2 Lens not working properly at all.

The only sure fire way to fix the slim ps2 lens problem is to purchase, and install, a new slim ps2 lens. While I wish that there were other solutions, there simply are not. If you caught it in time, and applied the lens fix spoken about earlier in this article, then you could avoid having to purchase a new lens. However, with replacement lens prices for the slim ps2 as low as $35.00, it’s certainly not an expensive repair, and certainly much cheaper than going out and buying a new slim PS2 console.

While some games simply skip, due mainly to scratches on the surface of the DVD disc (game disc) or dirt and finger prints, once cleaned, these games should boot and load just fine.

Contact Lenses and Dry Eyes

March 6th, 2010 by admin

Often contact lenses can lead to dry eye syndrome. Eyes will feel itchy and irritated and wearing contacts will become become very uncomfortable. However, the actual topic of this article goes towards the opposite site. Contact lenses can actually help to prevent eyes from becoming too dry. Why is that you might ask. If one is already suffering from severe eye dryness some contact lens brands can a) help to stop the eyes from drying and b) release some gel from their inner surface to the eye and therefore keeping the eye refreshed and wet. Wet might be the wrong term as we are talking about dry eyes, but compared to how the eye would feel like without this little help, wet is a good term.

I am wearing contact lenses since 1997 and just recently I found out the hard way that I am actually suffering from dry eye syndrome. I had signs of this in the past, but never ever put the dots together until now. What had happened was that I bruised my left eye really bad. After 10 days the eye was still extremely red and started feeling itchy. I made an appointment with my eye doctor accordingly to get the eye checked out. I was wearing my glasses that day and my eyes were really hurting when I arrived for my appointment in the late afternoon. The eye doctor checked out my eyes and noticed the severe dryness. He went back through my chart and asked me a few questions. He then came back with the following explanation.

For one, my left eye was Ok. It was bruised, but otherwise Ok (besides the dryness). But he also determined the severe eye dryness and then explained to me how the contacts I am using actually protect my eyes from drying too much. And when he explained the details to me it suddenly all made much more sense. So, I went home and even though it was late afternoon I swapped glasses to contacts and within one hour my eyes were actually feeling much better.

So, if you are suffering from dry eyes I highly recommend talking to your eye doctor. A combination of specific contact lenses and eye plugs can significantly lower your dry eye symptoms. It might take a couple of weeks before you see the results – depending on your situation. In my case when I switched contact lenses I saw improvements within about 7 days.

Top 3 Recommended Lenses For Your New Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera

March 3rd, 2010 by admin

A new Nikon D80 body sitting beside a recently-opened box on your table is one of the most amazing sights to behold. You’d have to get one for yourself to understand the sensation.

A digital SLR camera on its own, however, is pretty much next to useless – you’d need to buy a lens (or two, three or more) in order to start taking photographs with it. The only problem is, there must be something like 1,013 lenses out there to choose from, at least, it starts feeling like it after you spend hours, if not days, thumbing through catalogs and spec sheets, browsing forums, reading debates and arguments over which lenses to buy (or not to buy) and getting advice from one friend too many, other enthusiasts and professionals in the field.

All you’d really like to know now is, what are the best lenses for your Nikon D80?

I have some good news for you – if you’re simply coming into SLR photography for personal pleasure, as a pastime or simply to get better pictures for sharing with your family and friends, I can quickly list down 3 lenses you can get right now without having to bust your bank account. From the selections below, simply select lens #1 only, #2 only, #3 only, #1 & #2 or #1 & #3 depending on your budget.

Nikon Lens #1 – The Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D AF lens. For $100 or less, there is no other lens out there that can give you sharper images for the money. You can buy $400 lenses which give marginally sharper pictures, but the 50mm f/1.8 lens has the highest sharpness / dollar-spent ratio in the industry. Its maximum 1.8 aperture also allows you to take great-looking portraits with a blurred background, the kind you see in some professional shots. It’s small, it’s light, it’s great for taking photos in dimly-lit locations where flash is not allowed.

Nikon Lens #2 – The Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom lens. That was a mouthful, wasn’t it? Yes, this is a zoom lens, unlike the 50mm f/1.8 mentioned above. Meaning you can take big-group shots in tight locations and include everybody into the picture, and it also allows you to go to 70mm for relatively tight portrait shots. Hunt around for $320-ish prices, and not a penny more, at your camera stores. Before the availability of Lens #3 that I’m about to mention, this glass was a firm favourite among many casual photographers who shoot travel and vacation images.

Nikon Lens #3 – The Nikkor 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6g IF-ED AF-S DX VR.This lens is so hot. How so? Well, it’s hot enough to be out-of-stock at virtually all stores, but you can find one if you’re a walk-in customer, and Nikon is bending backwards to ramp up production to meet demand. Why is it hot? Well, because it’s the only lens on the market offering such a huge zoom range, with fast autofocus action and even a VR mechanism that helps you get steady shots without the use of flash. You’ll appreciate how useful the VR is if you’re in a museum that doesn’t allow you to use flash and tripods – the new version of the VR technology Nikon made available on this lens allows you to eliminate handshake at ever slower shutter speeds which beats out the VR capability in more expensive, but older lenses. $750 is all you need to own this lens which you can take 90% of your shots with.

So, there you have it, the lowdown on which lens to get for your D80. Are there better lenses to be had? Of course, but you’ll be paying through the nose for those, and the high prices can only be justified if you have special requirements in your photography pursuit, or if you’re an enthusiast who cannot tolerate not having the absolute best lenses on hand. Be careful though, lusting over pricier and bigger lenses without knowing how to value or profit from them is only going to mean more money down the drain.

Good luck in your decision, and enjoy an amazing photographic experience with your new D80 and lenses!

I love color contact lenses. I probably tried all colors you can imagine, from different brands. And one thing I've discovered that while some colored contacts make my eyes very attractive, others looked fake or simply horrible. After a lot of trial and error that I have the rules for selecting best color lenses for your eyes.

To begin, you should know that color contact lenses can be of two types – the opaque color contact lenses and enhancement.Extensions to color the lens of the eye a different color or make your eyes appear brighter and more sparkling. They are only suitable for people with light eyes – blue, green, gray or brown. These lenses are partially transparent, which makes them look very natural.

On the other hand, opaque lenses can completely change the color of your eyes. These objectives are not transparent, so that they are suitable for people with dark eyes. If your natural color is brownand if you want sky blue eyes, you will need opaque color contacts, enhancements will not work for you. People with light eyes can wear both types of lenses, depending on the effect they want.

Contacts for subtle color change

For girls, of course with blue eyes, blue or aqua color contacts work wonders. You may ask why a person with blue eyes want colored lenses. Since the blue lenses that will improve a great difference in your appearance. YourThe eyes are still blue, but they look much brighter and more attention. My eyes are blue and I like to wear blue contacts, my favorite is Acuvue 2 colors "Ocean Blue".

For work, of course, gray eyes, the color blue very well. The color is deep blue, as above, blue-eyed, over a blue-gray, but it seems very natural and attractive. The best choices here are Freshlook Dimensions or Acuvue 2 colors.

Contact us look at the beautiful green landscape blue or gray eyes. TheHowever, the change is remarkable how Jade is green, mixed with natural colors.

And add your sparkling eyes can try Freshlook Radiance color contacts. My favorite color is Eden () on a blue or gray eyes. Sunrise and autumn colors look very interesting over the eyes brown.

Contact lenses for a radical change

For the color of brown eyes dramatically you need to change the lens opaque. The best choices are Acuvue 2 Colors opaque, Freshlook ColorBlends, orIllusions by Ciba Vision

The best colors for women with dark eyes and dark hair are Freshlook ColorBlends Sapphire or Amethyst. The change will be dramatic, nobody will lose your new look.

If you have blue eyes or gray, but you want to change the color of something completely different, go for honey color contacts. These lenses will appear on your hottest, and you can increase the effect, the form in natural colors, with a warm color lipstick.

Color Contact LensesSecurity

If you have contact lenses to improve your vision, you know how to set up and take care of them properly. If only the cosmetic color contacts, ask your doctor to wear their safety.

The most important rule is that color contact lenses block oxygen supply to your eyes more clear prescription contacts. In reality, the part of those in no oxygen. This means that, if not for the health of your eyes, wear your colorLenses for more than 6-8 hours a day. And you should never sleep in them.

Treat yourself to a pair of colored contact lenses. Nothing can affect the appearance of women as beautiful sparkling eyes. And it is very fun to wear the lenses of different colors from time to time, she for people who change their appearance, as are excellent.

Soft Contact Lenses

February 26th, 2010 by admin

There are three kinds of contact lenses including soft contact lenses, rigid glass permeable contact lenses, and hard glass contact lenses. Most physicians suggest the soft or the rigid glass permeable contact lenses and in very rare cases prescribe the hard glass contact lenses. Bifocal, astigmatic, colored and other contact lenses are all available in these three kinds.

Soft contact lenses are made of hydrophilic plastic. As soon as they are applied, they absorb the water in the eyes and become soft and pliable. This allows them to fit perfectly in the eye. They are very popular as vision correction lenses and comfortably contour to most eyeballs without any complications.

As mentioned, lenses for people with astigmatism either due to near or far sightedness, bifocals problems, color contacts, and practically every other kind of vision correcting lenses can be found in soft contact lenses varieties. A specialized variety of soft contact lenses are also used these days to reshape the cornea during nights. This helps in giving clear vision even without the contacts during the day, but is not a permanent solution to the problem and the specialized lenses need to be worn every night for good vision the next day. Cornea reshaping helps to encounter myopia during the day.

Since most eyes can adjust to the soft contact lenses, they are definitely more popular than other types of contacts. Also, since they mold well to the eyeball, chances of dust particles getting caught and causing irritation is considerably lesser. Patients who use them find it easier to handle them while inserting and removing as they stick to the finger due to their softness.

Soft contact lenses require much care. The best option would be to use the disposable kind if the patient can afford them since they are the expensive kind in contact lenses. They must be cleaned in a sterilizing solution if they are not the disposable kind. After the soft lenses are cleaned, they must be stored in storing solution and must not be allowed to dry. In the event the lenses are not clean, they are liable to cause eye infections, irritation, and itchiness. It is suggested to choose disposable contact lenses. If the daily disposable ones are too expensive, the next option would be to change the lens at least once a week or once a month at the latest.

Negligence in taking good care of soft contact lenses can result in the lenses causing severe damage to the eyes and wreaking further havoc with the eyesight in the future.
